THE CURRICULUM

The school curriculum is continually under review according to the guidelines of the National Curriculum documents and is aimed at providing opportunities for each child to develop his or her full potential. Children are encouraged to work towards learning targets that are set for them on a regular basis.

Time spent on the National Curriculum subjects of English, Mathematics, Science, Design & Technology, Information Technology, History, Geography, Music, Art and PE is planned for each year group in accordance with National Curriculum Guidelines.

Children in their early years work on the DfEE Foundation Stage Curriculum. Children in Years 1 and 2 work on programmes of study for Key Stage 1. All Year 2 children (7 year olds) are tested according to statutory assessment procedures at the end of Key Stage 1. We follow the Buckinghamshire Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education throughout the school. We link this closely with our work in PSHE and Citizenship.

In addition to working on a full curriculum the children have the opportunities to join a weekly lunchtime French Club and a Football club. A daily lunchtime computer club is also provided.

We encourage enquiring minds, imagination, reasoned argument and logical thinking. We try to instil respect for religious and moral values, tolerance of other races, religions and ways of life, an understanding of the world in which we live and an appreciation of past and present human achievements. Self-motivation and self-discipline are strongly encouraged.

As may be expected in a school situated amid beautiful countryside, extensive use is made of the environment.

We encourage parents to help their children at home and we will provide workshop sessions to explain new methods.

SPECIAL NEEDS

The Governors have drawn up a policy for Special Educational Needs in line with the Code of Practice on Special Needs (DfEE 1993). A copy of our policy is available for inspection in the office. Governors report on the working of this policy at their Annual Meeting for parents.

SEX EDUCATION

It is recognised that it is a parents' right and responsibility to give sex education to their own children, but the pupils study the life cycle of all living things. Discussion is open and thoughtful, and questions are honestly answered.

VISITS AND SCHOOL JOURNEYS

Teachers regularly arrange educational visits to support the work being covered in class. Visits by theatre groups, musicians and other performers also take place. When a class goes on a trip we ask for a voluntary contribution to help cover our costs. Outings are always organised as a valuable part of the curriculum being studied, and provide many benefits over classroom teaching in extending the child's interest in a subject.

SUGGESTIONS AND COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE SCHOOL CURRICULUM

Parents who are concerned and wish to complain about the school curriculum offered to their child, should in the first instance discuss the matter in detail with the Headteacher. It is recognised, however, that there may be circumstances where the situation is not resolved by seeing the Headteacher. In such cases, parents may approach the Chairman of the Governors or the Area Senior Advisory Officer at the Education Office, Chiltern District Offices, King George V Road, Amersham.
